Augusta Echo® Azalea plant care
Augusta Echo® are easy plants to keep and they’re relatively low maintenance. They are also generally resistant to most common garden pests, which will reduce your garden chores even further. Learn how to grow azaleas and create the optimal azalea growing conditions by following the easy steps below.
When to plant azaleas
While you can plant Augusta Echo® Azaleas throughout the year, the best time to plant azaleas is in spring or autumn. During these seasons, temperatures are cooler and rainfall is more abundant, which will help your new plants adapt to your garden more easily. If you need to plant azaleas in summer, choose a day when temperatures are cool and keep your plants well-watered to avoid overly dry soil.
Where to plant azaleas
Unlike some other azalea varieties, Augusta Echo® Azaleas can handle bright sun, but they will also grow in part shade. In very hot locations, the best place to plant azaleas is in a spot in your garden that receives some afternoon shade.
Azaleas are acid-loving plants that grow best in rich, well-draining soil. Ideally, soil pH levels should be between 5.5 and 6.5. If you have more neutral or alkaline soil, considering amending your soil with a soil acidifier prior to planting. Alternatively, use chelated iron to help your plants absorb nutrients better in low acid environments.
How to plant azaleas
When you’re ready to plant azaleas, dig a hole that is as deep as your root ball and about 2 to 3 times as wide. You may want to amend the soil a bit with organic matter, like compost or aged manure, before backfilling your planting hole. Be sure to provide your plants with adequate space as they will spread. If you’re growing multiple Augusta Echo® Azalea plants together, space your plants at least 5 to 7’ apart. These azaleas look particularly attractive when placed in mass plantings, but they will work delightfully as single specimen plants too!
After planting your new azalea, keep your plants well-watered and provide them with a regular application of organic azalea fertilizer for even more blooms. For best results, aim for soil that stays consistently moist, but never soggy. Adding a thick, 2 to 3” layer of organic mulch around the base of your plants can lock in soil moisture levels and reduce weeds too.
How big do azaleas get
Augusta Echo® Azaleas are large shrubs that can be used for privacy or as a backdrop plant in your landscape design. These plants will grow to about 6’ tall when mature and may spread between 6 and 10’ wide.
History of Augusta Echo® Azalea
Azaleas are flowering, evergreen shrubs that belong to the genus Rhododendron. Both rhododendrons and azaleas originally come from Asia, with many species that are native to Japan, China and the Himalayan mountains. In the wild, these plants are known for their deep green leaves, which provide year round color, as well as their trumpet-shaped flowers, which are highly attractive to pollinators.
Due to their beauty and utility as garden plants, azaleas have been carefully bred by plant experts to favor certain characteristics. Different azalea varieties grow to different heights, produce different colored blooms and offer other important features. Echo® azaleas were specially developed to bloom in spring and again in autumn. This particular azalea variety is named for the “echo” or second flush of flowers that emerges in fall.
