How to care for roses
Many gardeners are reluctant to keep roses because some rose types are notoriously difficult to grow. But Double Knock Out® Roses are hardy plants that are super beginner friendly. All they need is consistent water, full sun and a regular application of fertilizer and they’ll rebloom again and again for season long color.
Double Knock Out® Roses will benefit from a spring pruning. Snip away dead branches and cut stems back to 6 to 12” above the ground, which will encourage more bud development. These plants are fast growers too, so they bounce back quickly after pruning.

Best time of the year to plant roses
The best time of the year to plant rose bushes is either in early spring after your last frost date or autumn, about 6 weeks before frost is expected. Roses can also be planted in summer, but they will need additional care and more frequent watering to help them adjust to your garden.
Where to plant rose bushes
Roses, including Double Knock Out® Roses, should be planted in full sun and rich well-draining soil. These plants can also be kept in containers, but they should be located in an area that receives at least 6 hours of bright light daily.
How to plant roses
Double Knock Out® Roses can be planted singly or in a large grouping to create an even showier display of flowers. Just make sure plants are spaced at least 3’ apart to give your roses plenty of room to spread.
When you’re ready to start planting, dig a hole that is at least as deep as your plant’s root ball and 2 to 3 times as wide. Place your plant in the hole so that it is planted at the same depth that it was growing in its nursery pot and then backfill the hole with soil. After planting, keep yourDouble Knock Out® Roses well-watered by providing them with 1 to 2” of water per week.
To give your new rose bushes a head start on the growing season, consider amending your soil with compost or other organic matter prior to planting your roses. Once your plants are in the soil, add a thick, 2 to 3” layer of mulch around your plants to reduce weeds and conserve soil moisture levels.
Growing roses in pots
Double Knock Out® Roses can also be grown in pots, provided that pots are well-draining and at least 15 to 20” in diameter. Select containers that are as deep as possible, ideally 2 to 2 ½’ deep at a minimum, to ensure your rose bush roots can develop fully.
Growing roses in containers is a great solution for small garden spaces and it also gives you more choices for where you can locate your roses. Container roses can be kept on balconies, sunny porches, patios and other outdoor spaces that could use a bit more flower color!
How tall do roses grow?
Mature Double Knock Out® Roses grow about 3 to 4’ tall and as many feet wide. They can also be kept a bit smaller with pruning.
History of Double Knock Out® Rose
Roses were first cultivated in Asia about 5000 years ago and they have remained one of the mostly highly coveted garden plants ever since. Prized for their colorful and delicately formed blooms, roses are mostly kept as ornamentals; however, some produce edible rosehips that can be brewed into teas and jams and jellies. Fragrant rose varieties are top choices for scent gardens as well and roses of all sorts are commonly grown in cottage garden designs.
Knock Out® roses were first developed by the esteemed plant breeder Will Radler who wanted to create a cold hardy and disease resistant rose type. The resulting Knock Out® roses were a huge hit with gardeners and they even won the All-America Rose Selections award in 2000. Over the years, millions of‘Knock Out®’roses have sold, but Mr. Radler dreamed of an improved rose variety. So he createdDouble Knock Out® Roses, which have even more petals on their fully double flowers.
