How to care for hydrangeas
If you’re new to keeping hydrangeas, learn how to take care of hydrangeas with the simple care tips below. When properly maintained, Pop Star® hydrangeas are hardy plants that will come back year after year with minimal fuss. However, you can maximize your blooms by providing your plant with the right hydrangea growing conditions.
When to plant hydrangeas
Hydrangeas will be less stressed if planted in spring or autumn. You can also plant hydrangeas in summer, but it’s not ideal as plants will need to be watered more frequently to help them get established in your garden.
Where to plant hydrangeas
In cold regions, Pop Star® should be provided with as much sun as possible – ideally 6+ hours of bright light daily. In hot areas, it can be a good idea to plant Pop Star® hydrangeas in a spot in your garden that receives some afternoon shade to help protect the plant from heat stress.
Beyond light considerations, hydrangeas will grow best in rich, well-draining soil.If your garden has very poor soil, you may want to amend it with a bit of compost before sowing your plant. On the other hand, you may want to try out container growing as Pop Star® will thrive in pots too!
Hydrangea care in pots
Because they are so compact, Pop Star® are some of the best hydrangeas to grow in pots. Just make sure you choose a container that has plenty of drainage holes to avoid waterlogged roots and root rot.Pots that are at least 16 to 24” in diameter will provide your new plants have plenty of room to grow so you won’t need to repot them as often.
To plant hydrangeas in a container, choose a rich, well-draining potting mix. Since you can alter flower color based on pH levels, you may want to select potting mixes that are specially designed for alkaline or acid-loving plants. Alternatively, you can amend your soil with sulfur or lime to adjust pH levels. Plant your plant as deeply as it was planted in its nursery pot and water often. After all, container grown plants will dry out more quickly than plants in garden beds.
How to plant a hydrangeas in the ground
Pop Star® hydrangeas also grow exceptionally well in garden beds and you can plant them on their own or group them together for an even more impressive flower display. Consider placing your hydrangeas towards the back of your garden to accentuate smaller perennial and annual flowers.
To plant your hydrangeas, dig a hole that is as deep as your plant’s pot and 2 to 3 times as wide. Place your plant in the hole and then backfill it in with soil and water the soil well to help roots settle in.Pop Star® hydrangeas will appreciate a good dose of a slow release fertilizer, which should be applied in June or July.Fertilizers intended for roses are a good choice and they will support the growth of even more hydrangea flowers.
How big do hydrangeas get
Pop Star® hydrangeas were specially developed to fit in smaller spaces and mature plants only grow to about 2 to 3’ tall. You can keep these plants even smaller by pruning them in spring or autumn. Since Pop Star® hydrangeas produce flowers on new wood, you won’t need to worry about damaging buds when pruning your plants at these times of the year.
History of Pop Star® Bigleaf Hydrangea
Hydrangeas are native to America and Asia, but they first gained popularity in Europe when they were brought to the continent by an American colonist in 1736. Word of hydrangeas quickly spread and gardeners and botanists developed many different hydrangea cultivars through careful plant breeding practices.
More recently, Endless Summer® hydrangeas were developed for their reblooming flowers and hardy nature and they were first released in 2014. Since then, different Endless Summer® varieties have made their way to the marketplace. The newest addition is the Pop Star® hydrangea, which made its debut in 2022.
